Lost 45 pounds and feel great!

My Journey to Health

Over the last 16 months, I have lost more than 45 lbs, achieved healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and completely changed how I feel about myself and my life. And in truth, it was one of the easiest things I’ve ever done. Why? Because I was ready! Ready to get healthy. Ready to lose weight. Ready to feel better.

One year after a complete hysterectomy at the age of 40, a consultation with Dr Hoover balanced my hormones naturally, at which time he told me that if I followed his instructions, I could lose weight without having to ‘diet’, provided I stayed within ‘1300 – 1500 calories per day’. I scoffed.

Throughout my adult life, I’ve exercised fairly regularly on my treadmill, through various gym memberships and home weight sets. However, over the last five years or so, I wasn’t seeing any results from my efforts. I downloaded a smart-phone calorie-counting app and began to religiously log everything I ate or drank throughout the day. It was an eye opener, to say the least! Calorie-counting led to ingredient reading, which led to smarter choices and more home-cooked meals.

The day I realized that I could ‘gain’ consumable calories by logging my workout information, my life truly changed. I’ve always been motivated by the reward system, and if I could earn a serving of frozen yogurt by using my treadmill for 30 minutes a day, without sacrificing calories from my meals, that just motivated me to workout consistently. It boils down to what we’ve heard our whole lives: Eat less and move more. It really is as simple as that. Make smart choices about what kind of calories you eat and how you ingest them. Three sensible meals a day, plus a couple snacks, really is doable. I’ve eaten tastier, more varied foods since I’ve started this journey than I did before. It isn’t a diet plan, it is a plan for living, which I will follow the rest of my life.

I just celebrated my 47th birthday, and feel better now than I did at 30!
